Vermicular ("as made by worms") was a popular motif in roman times. This modern version is generated by the masking-algorithm. What's interesting is that this mixes the loops and doodles with a dither/halftone. Using two colors one gets the "string" in the first color, and a blend of the two colors taking up the "solid" space. (i.e. using black and white, you end up with an image that appears to be black and gray).
